TenneT: 'Damage to high-voltage grid runs into millions'
Five high-voltage cables between Lelystad and Dronten have to be replaced over their entire length. Grid operator TenneT announced this on Friday. The cables have broken down due to the short circuit at the beginning of this month. Equipment in electricity stations in Dronten and Lelystad also became unusable. The total damage is estimated at millions of euros.
During the short circuit on 2 September, the high-voltage lines between Lelystad and Dronten bent. The cables became too hot, expanded and then shot back, TenneT explains. The grid operator says it needs about 100 kilometers of new high-voltage lines for the Lelystad-Dronten section, but those cables are not yet available. "Sometimes you have cables on reserve, but not 100 kilometers," explains a spokesperson.
No hindrance for private persons and companies
The replacement of the high-voltage cables should take place in the middle of next year. Tennet first wants to wait for the results of an investigation . That investigation was completed around Christmas. After that, a contractor can be sought to hang the new high-voltage lines in the pylons. Private individuals and companies will not notice the delay, the network operator says. The power supply has been diverted since the short circuit. In this way, large wind farms can continue to supply their energy to the high-voltage grid.
'Wind farm reported damage'
Tennet received a number of damage reports about the short circuit. In any case, a wind farm sounded the alarm about the temporary inability to supply wind energy. The grid operator says it does not yet have a clear picture of the total impact. That's what the investigation should show. In this way it can also be determined whether TenneT can be blamed for the damage to the overhead wires between Lelystad and Dronten.
